Parents,
We have SO MUCH going on with Liberty Wellness 4 Life! Adventure Run Club We continue to be 50+ Leopard Strong at Running Club. We are purchasing a RACE CLOCK for club and events. The stduents and helpers are SUPER excited about this addition!!! Jump Rope/ Hoops for Heart The students are learning about heart health through basketball and jump roping (Hoops for Heart in grades 3-6 and Jump Rope for Heart in grade K-2. If interested helping to raise money for the American Heart Association, please click here And to see the AHA video about the fundraising, please click here PACER The students have participated in their second Pacer of the year. The students did AWESOME!!! Our goal is to KNOW our current heart endurance and see if it's getting stronger, to KNOW how to improve our heart health - follow the SEE principle - Sleep the right amount nightly, Eat healthy POWER FOODS, Exercise (play hard 60 minutes a day). Students in grades 3-6 are tracking their scores here And we have some GREAT staff who participate with their classes too (see the pictures). BOLD (BOys LeaDing) We continue to have boys leading by setting up gym space EVERY day in the morning. They are AWESOME helpers! They also help with COOL projects: some are working on a bike park being approved for Liberty, and others just finished building a Little Free Library box - see the picture above. FIVE STAR TRACK and FIELD DAY is May 12th!!! Mark your calendars for the K-2 events in the morning and the 3-6 in the afternoon. BIKE and WALK to SCHOOL! Parents,
The first session of Adventure Run Club is under way. If you are still interested please access the permission/information slip here. The club meets after school on Thursdays until 350pm for grades 3-6. The theme of the first session is Liberty Ninja Warrior - we are working on both heart endurance through running, but also dynamic strength exercises - crawling (hands and feet), climbing, hanging, jumping/landing, and rolling. The students will begin to run a Liberty obstacle course and we'll end with our own race. Other opportunities in the Worthington community: Sunday, Sept 18 The Warrior Run at Granby: click here www.WorthingtonWellnessWarriors.com Thur, September 22 (and other opportunities on the flier) The Spiral Mile at Colonial Hills: click here Saturday, October 8 The Les Eisenhart at Thomas Worthington: click here Dear Liberty Families, Welcome back to the new school year! I am excited to teach, work with, get active, be creative, and learn from all of the Liberty Leopards this year. As we enter the new year, I wanted to share with you some information about our Wellness 4 Life (a.k.a. 'Physical Education', 'PE', and 'gym') class. Here is a presentation (click) I share with all of the classes on the first week of school: overview of the class; a 'fitness scavenger hunt', and our Fair Play Contract (guidelines). I also enjoy sharing how my family gets active over the summer. I loved seeing Leopards at the Worthington Pool weekly, at WYB Track and Field, at the United 94 Summer Soccer Preseason Week, and at other fun places in the community. We participated in our first Pacer (click) of the year. We talk often about effort (they always give a HUGE effort) and not comparing to others, but to our last score/s to see trends. The hope is that our 'heart power' improves over time by following our S.E.E. principle - Sleep the right amount nightly (for your age-10 to 11 hours for elementary-aged students); Eat POWER foods (healthy fruits, grains, proteins, fats, dairy); Exercise (Play Hard) 60 minutes a day! While never perfect... if we follow these principles on more days than we don't, we are on the pathway to a healthy life. Our PACER scores are pretty good when we compare May 2016 to August 2016 (how we did over the summer). 47% of students improved over this summer. In comparison, 90% of students improved over the 2015-16 school year. There are many reasons for dips for fitness in the summer, so almost half the school improving is pretty good! To help improve heart health, we will hold our annual running club again this year for grades 3-6. If interested, we'd love your help! The club will meet Thursdays after school for 5 week sessions - please see here for the current permission slip. JOIN MR. SMITH at the WK X-COUNTRY LABOR DAY 5k Runners and walkers, please join us on Monday, September 5th at 9:00 a.m. for a simultaneous start of our annual event held in the beautiful neighborhood of Worthington Hills in northwest Columbus. The course is a relatively flat and fast loop that starts and finishes at Worthington Hills Elementary School. Drinks and refreshments will be available after the event, and two water stops will be provided along the course. It's great to see the sun shining and everything greening up! We finished our in-class preparation for the Five Star Track and Field Olympic Edition (coming Friday, May 6) on Friday. Mr. Zach Roush (our student teacher from the Ohio State University is finishing his student teacher experience at Liberty on Friday as well). The students have put in an AMAZING effort! The Olympic Motto is "Higher, Faster, Stronger" which is what we encourage and promote in class. (this is in contrast to 'highest, fastest, strongest' where the goal is the be the best - these leaves everyone else (except the highest, fastest, strongest) on the outside. The Five Star Track and Field Day is all about participation, encouraging and getting encouraged by others, and giving a 100% effort to achieve personal best scores in student-choice events. We talk often in class about the long term JOY we have when we give our best efforts in EVERYTHING we do! Students will be challenging themselves in skills that are the basis of almost ALL sports: RUNNING: 70m run and 1 lap run at Sutter JUMPING: high jump, running long jump, and standing jump THROWING: softball throw and javelin for distance, shot put for power, and frisbee for FUN! We need your help to make the day a success. I have leaders for each event, but need parent support for the leaders (timing, measuring, organizing, and of course, encouraging). If you're interested in helping, please email [email protected] for more information! May 6 830-11ish - Grades K-3 1230-230ish - Grades 4, 5, 6 and 1/2 day Kindergarten Thanks. Mr. Smith [email protected] Liberty Families,
I hope your Spring is off to a good start. I want to share with you some COOL things going on in the gym with Liberty Wellness 4 Life. Student Teacher We have an OSU Student Teacher visiting with us until April 22. His name is Zack Roush and he is off to an amazing start. From Mr. Roush: "I’m doing my student teaching with Mr. Smith. I am a student at The Ohio State University, and will be graduating this semester. I enjoy sports and recreation and hope to inspire students to get active and enjoy being physically active as much as I do! I’m so excited to be teaching at Worthington Liberty Elementary. So far, I’ve had an awesome time helping with the archery unit! My goal is to encourage students to develop a lifelong love and appreciation for physical activity. So have fun and be active!" Mr. Roush will be leading a 4 lesson unit for our Five Star Track and Field (running, jumping, throwing, IMPROVING with PERSONAL BESTS, and competing with Fair Play). The Five Star Track and Field (Olympic Edition!) Day will be Friday, May 6 (we can use your help - please email [email protected] if interested helping with our fun, active, day!). More info to come soon! Jump/Hoops for Heart The Liberty Elementary community raised $3,594!! We crushed our school goal of $1500:) Nakai Hawkins (3rd grade) and Austin Marsh (1st grade) are our top fundraisers - over $300 each. Wow! Thanks you all for supporting the American Heart Association. Prizes were ordered at the beginning of March - the AHA shares prizes take 3-5 weeks - I know the students are eager to receive their prizes. And speaking of jump roping - it is an AMAZING inexpensive exercise for ALL ages. The students LOVED challenging Mr. Marsh and I in class:) Archery The students (Grades 3-6) did amazing with the archery unit! ALL students improved in their technique and accuracy. Our fifth graders (as part of their State of Ohio Assessment) became 'professional coaches' by assessing their classmates, and even creating a practice program for each other in how to improve. 6th grader, Shea Versele, was our top archer in our final day 'Bull's-eye Challenge' - Shea scored an amazing 48/50 points - and becomes our FIRST EVER instagram post:) I am new to Instagram and see it as a GREAT way to 'open the walls of the gym' to all of you. Please join us (I have setting on private, so please make a request on Instagram). Shea beat both Mr. Smith (45) and Mr. Roush (44) with his amazing accuracy:) We will have a new session of running club beginning soon. More info soon! That's it for now. Stay active! Mr. Smith Parents,
I want to share about our after school-race (1 Mile Run to Beat Winter and Beat Hunger) yesterday. By the numbers:
Thanks for participating to create community through moving! Enjoy the Thanksgiving Break! Mr. Smith Click below for Beat Winter-Beat Hunger RACE RESULTS: K-3 Race Results 4-6 Race Results Parents, We have several GREAT opportunities coming up in Worthington to get ACTIVE - click on links below. We also have a NEW Running Club forming here at Liberty. The 1 mile races continue to be plentiful this year. Below are links to races - these are a blast - I have seen several Liberty Leopards out at the races! All three of my children have participated over the years (my youngest, Ryan, enjoyed the Spiral Mile at Colonial Hills a couple weeks ago) -my middle, Keegan, and olderst, Keira, had great experiences that have led them to running x-country at McCord, and Keira, running at WK. Sat., Nov 7 at Colonial Hills: 8am check-in; 9am race. Preregistration is highly encouraged. Thursday, Nov 12 at Evening Street; 4:30pm race begins; 3:45pm check-in. We are in the beginning stages of forming our own Running Club. I spoke with Warren Hawkins (dad of 4th grader AJ Hawkins) at the Spiral Mile about restarting a Running Club here at Liberty. In the past week we have added 4 other parents as well as 5 staff interested in joining to help! This is awesome!!! Warren and I even walked the property last week and targeted a Fall race (more info very soon). We have one more new 'club' forming - Sports Council. I have a team of students that help EVERY morning w set-up and in getting active. We have decided to expand a group of "helper-leaders" to talk through and help with creative ideas with recess, wellness 4 life class, clubs, and more (goal is to help crate opportunities for 60 minutes of FUN exercise a day); to help set-up and try new equipment that comes in for wellness class; to HELP ideas become reality; and of course, to HAVE FUN and get active. Students will have to fill out an 'application' and get two teacher signatures (that will approve school that work is up to date and that effort is being made to be a good citizen and student at Liberty) if they are interested. We will make decisions of members based on the application of those that will be involved in Sport Council. Thanks for reading. Mr. Smith [email protected] P.S. What an incredible turnout for WALK/BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY - in the rain this week. Regan Versele and the PTA is doing an amazing job keeping students moving on these days (and giving a great token incentive!!). We are looking at a winter event to:
If you're interested designing the event and/or helping to run, please email me at [email protected]. Have a great weekend. Mr. Smith Parents, Welcome back to Liberty for the 2015-16 school year. It has been so much fun in the first couple rotations of lessons with your children. They have shared so many cool stories of how they were active this summer!!! I have had fun sharing with them some of the adventures our family has had this summer. If interested, here is a link of the fun we had this summer as a family in Worthington. Worthington Fun My wife, Tracey, and I also had an incredible trip abroad that we went on with some friends after 'winning' a trip at a silent auction for Cystic Fibrosis (my niece has CF and we attend a fundraiser annually in Wilmington, DE). While we saw some incredible things and had so much fun travelling, I did have an unfortunate bike accident in Scotland - I have been reminding the students of the importance of helmets!!! I am excited to get back on my bike next week - I have some days of catching up to do with students (several are riding daily to school!!). See pics from: SCOTLAND ICELAND I also have shared with the students about an 'assembly' we had as a staff on the day before school officially started. Our 'principal' of the district, Dr. Bowers shared with us the expectations of staff members, and I have posted them in the gym. The expectations can be found here, and I believe they will help make the relationship between staff, students, and families a strong one for our children! Please don't hesitate to contact me regarding any of the expectations set forth by Dr. Bowers. Staff Expectations Student Expectations (Fair Play Contract) Student Expectations with the Fair Play Contract. We are currently assessing our 'engines' (our heart and lung power) with the PACER assessment. We use the PACER too find our cardiovascular endurance level and to see if it has improved over the summer (and to see trends over time) - I'll be sharing how we did as a school next week. During last school year, over 90% of our students improved their cardiovascular endurance which is amazing! We have also talked about three habits that can help quickly improve our overall health which we call our S.E.E. principle. These are three habits that can help us try our best in everything we do daily. Sleep the right amount every night. We talked about the need for a consistent bed time, and the need to 'power off' before going to bed. SLEEP Eat POWER FOODS. We talked about the possibility of growing power foods in the backyard. I heard of so many gardens which is SO COOL to hear! We have had fun this summer with our peppers, tomatoes, and squash. EAT Exercise (play HARD) at least 60 minutes a day. EXERCISE EnJOY your Labor Day weekend! As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am here to serve your child and your family! All the best on a GREAT year!
