Dear Liberty Families, Welcome back to the new school year! I am excited to teach, work with, get active, be creative, and learn from all of the Liberty Leopards this year. As we enter the new year, I wanted to share with you some information about our Wellness 4 Life (a.k.a. 'Physical Education', 'PE', and 'gym') class. Here is a presentation (click) I share with all of the classes on the first week of school: overview of the class; a 'fitness scavenger hunt', and our Fair Play Contract (guidelines). I also enjoy sharing how my family gets active over the summer. I loved seeing Leopards at the Worthington Pool weekly, at WYB Track and Field, at the United 94 Summer Soccer Preseason Week, and at other fun places in the community. We participated in our first Pacer (click) of the year. We talk often about effort (they always give a HUGE effort) and not comparing to others, but to our last score/s to see trends. The hope is that our 'heart power' improves over time by following our S.E.E. principle - Sleep the right amount nightly (for your age-10 to 11 hours for elementary-aged students); Eat POWER foods (healthy fruits, grains, proteins, fats, dairy); Exercise (Play Hard) 60 minutes a day! While never perfect... if we follow these principles on more days than we don't, we are on the pathway to a healthy life. Our PACER scores are pretty good when we compare May 2016 to August 2016 (how we did over the summer). 47% of students improved over this summer. In comparison, 90% of students improved over the 2015-16 school year. There are many reasons for dips for fitness in the summer, so almost half the school improving is pretty good! To help improve heart health, we will hold our annual running club again this year for grades 3-6. If interested, we'd love your help! The club will meet Thursdays after school for 5 week sessions - please see here for the current permission slip. JOIN MR. SMITH at the WK X-COUNTRY LABOR DAY 5k Runners and walkers, please join us on Monday, September 5th at 9:00 a.m. for a simultaneous start of our annual event held in the beautiful neighborhood of Worthington Hills in northwest Columbus. Drinks and refreshments will be available after the event, and two water stops will be provided along the course.
