Parents, Help us build a treehouse at Liberty. Our Liberty Laps on November 26th will aid in us raising enough money to purchase materials and build a treehouse for our Adventure Unit. We are staying with the Rocky Mountain mural theme and will be making our 'treehouse' into a Ski Lift shed that will have access through a cargo net tube. Maybe a 'snowboard bench' on top! Many of our students continue to stay active in the Worthington Community in Wellness 4 Life Events - the Warrior Run at Granby, the Spiral Mile at Colonial Hills, and upcoming... the Beat Michigan by a Mile Event at Bluffsview. See the event page for more details. We will be hosting our own WINTER 1 MILE RACE called the Beat Winter Challenge: Helping to Stomp out Hunger in Worthington. The date is TBD and will be scheduled when we have SNOW! If interested in helping, please let me know. We could really use your help!!!! Please! Email [email protected]. WALK and BIKE to School Day continues to be a hit! Our next opportunity to Walk and Bike to School is in December. Help us hit our target of 300 movers. I continue to share my bike commute stories daily with the students. I am now up to 61 days and 244 miles this school year in my roundtrip bike to Liberty each day. It's been a BLAST so far - getting cold, but dressing warm helps! Thursday, November 14th we helped (a group of 1000s of schools) set a World Record of cup stacking in a single day! Mrs. Skelton's, Mrs. Carney's, and Ms. Schwartz's students were AWESOME as our cupstacking LEADERS during noon option. We had a large group of parents and students hear a story in the gym for Reading Night at Liberty. I read a book written by John Wooden called Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success. We discussed two of the themes of John Wooden's Pyramid of Success: ACTION and DETERMINATION. The students (and parents) were AWESOME. We may add an Adventure Night in December - stay tuned!!! That's all for now. Please mark this web page and check out for the latest Wellness 4 Life news. Mr. Smith Liberty Wellness 4 Life

Parents,
The first grading period is over. The year is off to a great start - we have spent time practicing and learning fitness principles, volleyball skills, educational gymnastics, tennis skills, and now... one of our students' favorite activities, the Adventure Unit!!! With the Adventure Unit we will have our own Liberty Ninja Warrior challenge (think America Ninja Warrior for elementary students!). Many of our students have also been active in the Worthington Community in Wellness 4 Life Races - the Warrior Run at Granby, the Spiral Mile at Colonial Hills, and all of their sport teams (as well as pick-up neighborhood games, biking, walking, etc.). I LOVE hearing their stories This Monday (Nov 11 from 12-3pm), Granby Elementary will be hosting a bike day with their new mountain bike course and a "pump track" brought in for the day. There will be free food, a chance to donate to their program, and other bike activities. I have been over there several times with my children and it is a BLAST! We will be hosting our own WINTER 1 MILE RACE called the Beat Winter Challenge: Helping to Stomp out Hunger in Worthington. The date is TBD and will be scheduled when we have SNOW! If interested in helping, please let me know. We could really use your help! WALK and BIKE to School Day continues to be a hit! Our next opportunity to Walk and Bike to School is November 13th. Mrs. Skelton's, Mrs. Carney's, and Ms. Schwartz's students will be our cupstacking LEADERS for noon option. Any student at Liberty interested can cupstack on this day, sign their name, and be part of this world record attempt!! That's all for now. Please mark this web page and check out for the latest Wellness 4 Life news. Mr. Smith Liberty Wellness 4 Life Parents,
We have many cool things going on at Liberty this month. September 25th will be our second Walk/ Bike to School Day of the month. We had over 230 students travel to school by their own power on September 11th!!! Please see the Events tab for up to date Worthington Wellness 4 Life Activities for elementary students around our district. The next event is the Warrior Run on Friday, September 20th at the McCord Track. Register by clicking the Events tab and finding link. Mountain Bike any day at Granby Elementary bike trail! During noon options weekly, Stephanie Woodrow (Coach Stephanie), will be getting our students fit for the 'Liberty Ninja Warrior Challenge' during our adventure unit (mid November to mid December). To 'qualify' for the competition, the students must join us for noon option and improve their strength, endurance, and balance. In Wellness 4 Life class we are learning volleyball skills and game play with our 3rd to 6th graders through a play practice approach, and learning educational gymnsatics (travelling, jumping and landing, rolling, and taking weight on hands) with our K-2 students culminating with end of class performances (Olympic or X-Games) with all of our skills. Get moving, keep moving, enJOY moving! Mr. Smith I hope the beginning of the school year is going well for your child! I wanted to share current Wellness News at Liberty:
Wednesday (September 11) will be the first Walk/ Bike to School Day of the Year. Liberty PTA and Regan Versele are heading up the days this school year. Please remind your children to stay safe by remaining on the sidewalks with the team of walkers. For students who walk/ bike on a regular basis, please meet in gym when you arrive to sign a grade level poster and to receive a small prize. **Challenge Mr. Smith to 100 days this year!!! If you can use your human power (walking, running, biking, etc.) to get to school 100 days, you will earn a Rita's Water Ice at the end of the year in May in the gym with Mr. Smith. Please log days already accomplished on the ticket below. (I am up to 16 days!!)** The Warrior Run is September 20th at the McCord Track. The school with the most participants earns a very cool travelling viking trophy. Let's be the school!! The race is an INCREDIBLE event you will not want to miss. It's a 1 mile race through obstacles, mud, and a group of crazy warriors at the end. The race is for students in 4th-6th grades (and Worthington Staff and parents!). I will be there along with my family and other Liberty students who have already signed up for the race. Please join us by signing up before September 16 (do it now!) at www.WorthingtonWellnessWarriors.com By the numbers: Over the summer 42.3% of our students improved on their Pacer (the Pacer measures cardiovascular endurance which we call our 'heart power'). To compare, 92% of our students improved during last school year (September 2012-May 2013). Our goal for this year is 95% for the school year. We speak daily about our S.E.E. principle to accomplish this goal:
